Preventive orthodontics can permit a conducive environment for permanent teeth to erupt inhibiting undesirable environmental factors or negative external factors that may interfere and produce a malocclusion.

Under this scope of preventive orthodontics are those procedures that promote the normal development of occlusion through timely correction of carious lesions, application of topical fluoride, eliminating habits or placing space maintainers to preserve the correct positions adjacent teeth.

The therapeutic approach of an orthodontist focuses on the act “before” that could alter the normal occlusal arrangement and conserving it from any other alteration.
